Are You Sleeping?

A wise man once told mi… “You can wake them up, those who sleep. But, my dear friend, those who are pretending to sleep, you can never wake them up!”

As the hour grows late, I wonder who is sleeping and who is pretending, and as I do so, the waters continue to flow under the bridges, the bridges that are burning…

Footprints In The Sand

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.

In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there was one only.

This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints, so I said to the Lord,

“You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there has only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?”

The Lord replied, “The years when you have seen only one set of footprints, my child, is when I carried you.”

Absolution By Death

The warrior of light was taken over by the dark side and the dark side made fear to the warrior. So much so that the warrior of light was ready to give up and accept death voluntarily. In the last of his moments of dark despair, he reaches out to his master.

He said to his master,”Master, I can no longer fight the good fight. I am weary and tired. I have lost my way and I don’t see the light anymore. Master, I am sorry if I am letting you down but I wish to embrace death.”

The master merely smiled and looked intently into the eyes of is young and inexperienced padawan and asked,”Do you really want to give up the good fight? Do you really want to commit suicide?”

The apprentice could not bear the stare of his master, avoiding it, he bowed in guilt and barely managed a whisper,”Yes.” The master’s smile broadened, “So be it. Consider yourself dead!”

The apprentice looked up and was shocked to see the beaming face of his master. His despair grew, he thought, my master must think very lowly of mi. He has given up on mi. Ashamed and humiliated he turned to leave.

“Now, my padawan, live, as if you are dead! Since you are dead you cannot be afraid or ashamed or belittled. You cannot be imprisoned or tortured or silenced. And if light be your path, you cannot be defeated.” The master paused.

The disciple stopped and the master continued,”Take no heed of the thoughts of the world, think those of your own, and let those thoughts be guided by the light. Take no heed of the actions of the world, act of your own and let the will be of the light. Then, the consequences will be only those that are enlightened. My friend you are not merely dead today consider yourself reborn.”

The darkness that once engulfed him, he could not sense anymore. He did not turn. He walked, his steps growing surer. The master was happy for he could be of some service and he murmured as he reflected on the days past,”Thy will shall be done!”

P.S. Adapted from a story that was told to mi by a wise man.
