R.I.P. Mike

Michael C. Ruppert
(February 3, 1951 – April 13, 2014)

A Prometheus.

He was a warrior for truth and who helped a lot of people make sense of the shared reality that we perceive. A truly humane being who loved the world with a passion that not many are capable of. As the days grow darker still your light will be missed. Thank you Mike and farewell. See you on the other side…

I had been following his work on and off for about 6 years now. A couple of months back, laboring over an unresolved question. I ran into this set of videos on Vice Magazine.

Apocalypse, Man: Michael C. Ruppert on World’s End
Apocalypse, Man: Michael C. Ruppert on World’s End on YouTube (Not for the faint of heart)

~

As we watch ourselves, our family, our friends and enemies, one and all loved ones; those in my own species and those in others, die. I cannot help but feel the love.

Yesterday I stumbled upon this song moments after I read about the passing of Mike.

Serendipidity? Synchronicity? Naah… more like quantum entanglement mechanics mi thinks…

And I hear that old familiar, you know, the one that resides in my head.

And I hear him say, “Yeah right!”

What Sarah Said by Death Cab for Cutie

And it came to me then
That every plan
Is a tiny prayer to father time

As I stared at my shoes
In the ICU
That reeked of piss and 409

And I rationed my breaths
As I said to myself
That I’d already taken too much today

As each descending peak
On the LCD
Took you a little farther away from me
Away from me

Amongst the vending machines
And year old magazines
In a place where we only say goodbye

It sung like a violent wind
That our memories depend
On a faulty camera in our minds

And I knew that you were truth
I would rather loose
Than to have never lain beside at all

And I looked around
At all the eyes on the ground
As the TV entertained itself

Cause there’s no comfort in the waiting room
Just nervous paces bracing for bad news
And then the nurse comes round
And everyone lifts their head
But I’m thinking of what Sarah said

That love is watching someone die

So who’s gonna watch you die

Do the Evolution by Pearl Jam

~

Woo..
I’m ahead I’m a man
I’m the first mammal to wear pants yeah
I’m at peace with my lust
I can kill ’cause in God I trust yeah
It’s evolution baby

I’m at piece I’m the man
Buying stocks on the day of the crash
On the loose I’m a truck
All the rolling hills I’ll flatten’ em out yeah
It’s herd behavior uh huh
It’s evolution baby

Admire me admire my home
Admire my song here’s my coat
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
This land is mine, this land is free
I’ll do what I want but irresponsibly
It’s evolution, baby

I’m a thief, I’m a liar
There’s my church, I sing in the choir:
{Hallelujah? Hallelujah?}

Admire me, admire my home
Admire my song, admire my clothes
Cause we know, appetite for a nightly feast
Those ignorant Indians got nothin’ on me
Nothin’, why?
Because, it’s evolution, baby!

I am ahead, I am advanced
I am the first mammal to make plans, yeah
I crawled the earth, but now I’m higher
Twenty-ten, watch it go to fire
It’s evolution, baby {2X}
Do the evolution
Come on, come on, come on

FROM THE WIKIPEDIA PAGE

When speaking about “Do the Evolution”, Vedder stated, “That song is all about someone who’s drunk with technology, who thinks they’re the controlling living being on this planet. It’s another one I’m not singing as myself.” Pearl Jam has stated that the novel Ishmael influenced the writing of Yield, and according to the novel’s writer, Daniel Quinn, this song comes the closest to expressing the ideas of the book.

Vedder stated:

This Daniel Quinn book, Ishmael…I’ve never recommended a book before, but I would actually, in an interview, recommend it to everyone….But this book, it’s kind of the book of my … My whole year has been kind of with these thoughts in mind. And on an evolutionary level, that man has been on this planet for 3 million years, so that you have this number line that goes like this [hands wide apart]. And that we’re about to celebrate the year 2000, which is this [holds hands less than one inch apart]. So here’s this number line; here’s what we know and celebrate. This book is a conversation with a man and an ape. And the ape really has it all together. He kinda knows the differences between him and the man, and points out how slight they are, and it creates an easy analogy for what man has done, thinking that they were the end-all. That man is the end-all thing on this earth. That the earth was around even so much longer before the 3 million years. Fifty million years of sharks and all these living things. Then man comes out of the muck, and 3 million years later he’s standing, and now he’s controlling everything and killing it. Just in the last hundred! Which is just a speck on this line. So what are we doin’ here? This is just a good reminder…And I’m anxious to see what happens. You know, I’ve got a good seat for whatever happens next. It’ll be interesting.

NOTES:

I remember distinctly hearing this song for the first time back in 2005. It struck a chord in mi somewhere but I dismissed it, there are other gems in that album you know, rather overpowering ones (Given To Fly & Wishlist). Anyway it finally hit mi properly in late November last year, when I was going through the entire catalog of Pearl Jam’s after I heard their latest album… Lightning Bolt. I will get into Lightning Bolt later, lets just say it came at a very strange time in my life 😛

Ishmael, I never could gather the courage to read. I know what the book is about. I know because I have heard multiple interviews of the author, Daniel Quinn and have received multiple recommendations from people I have been reading since 2008. Finally I am going to read it and I have put it in my summer reading list, fingers crossed.

What really boggles my mind, is to go back in time to 2005-06, there were so many signs that life gave mi back then. Signs of the things to come and I managed to completely ignore them. Sometimes I wonder how different things could have been, but Life is a chain reaction of colliding universes creating shared realities in thoughts and deeds, alternates to which can always be imagined, though, never to be realized. We continue to try and give meaning to everything in words, words whose meanings are unique, unique to each universe, and like snowflakes these universes of meaning, they come and go. Only sometimes, by purpose, fate or simple chance I know not for sure (still), but sometimes, as these universes collide a little light shines through.

Don’t get mi wrong, I hold no regrets, in fact I am quite incapable of holding regrets and in any case they were some of my best years.

Well except my one exceptional regret, that I started listening to Rock & Roll pretty late in life. Much gratitude to those who introduced mi to the good stuff and got the stone rolling, primarily Kailash, Rana, RJ, Appu, The Dude, thanks guys.

Hmm… As I hear Eddie scream in my head, I feel his angst…

Yield ~ Wiki

From the Wikipedia page:

In finance, the term yield describes the amount in cash (in percent terms) that returns to the owners of a security. Normally, it does not include the price variations, at the difference of the total return. Yield applies to various stated rates of return on stocks (common and preferred, and convertible), fixed income instruments (bonds, notes, bills, strips, zero coupon), and some other investment type insurance products (e.g. annuities).

Love’s Refrain

Love Boat Captain by Pearl Jam

~

Is this just another day,… this God forgotten place?
First comes love, then comes pain. Let the games begin,…
Questions rise and answers fall,… insurmountable.

Love boat captain
Take the reigns and steer us towards the clear,… here.
It’s already been sung, but it can’t be said enough.
All you need is love

Is this just another phase? Earthquakes making waves,…
Trying to shake the cancer off? Stupid human beings,…
Once you hold the hand of love,.. it’s all surmountable.

Hold me, and make it the truth,…
That when all is lost there will be you,…
Cause to the universe I don’t mean a thing
And there’s just one word I still believe
And it’s
Love,… love. love. love. love.

It’s an art to live with pain,… mix the light into grey,..
Lost 9 friends we’ll never know,.. 2 years ago today
And if our lives became too long, would it add to our regret?

And the young, they can lose hope cause they can’t see beyond today,…
The wisdom that the old can’t give away
Hey,…
Constant recoil…
Sometimes life
Don’t leave you alone.

Hold me, and make it the truth,…
That when all is lost there will be you.
Cause to the universe I don’t mean a thing
And there’s just one word that I still believe and it’s
Love,… love. love. love. love.

Love boat captain
Take the reigns,.. steer us towards the clear.
I know it’s already been sung,… can’t be said enough.
Love is all you need,.. all you need is love,..
Love,.. love,…
Love.

FROM THE WIKIPEDIA PAGE:

The lyrics for “Love Boat Captain” tackle existential matters. “Love Boat Captain” references the 2000 Roskilde tragedy with the line “Lost 9 friends we’ll never know… 2 years ago today.” When “Love Boat Captain” is performed in concert, Vedder modifies the lyric to reflect the passage of time since the tragedy.

There is also a reference to The Beatles’ song “All You Need Is Love” from the 1967 album, Magical Mystery Tour, with the lyrics “I know it’s already been sung,…can’t be said enough/Love is all you need,..all you need is love,…”

When speaking about the song, Vedder stated:

It feels a little strange talking about love that openly, but if you can’t do it now, when can you do it? Love is one resource that the corporations aren’t going to be able to monopolize. Which means there’s hope for us human beings yet.

When asked about the line, “The young can lose hope,” Vedder said:

I was happy to get that line because I’m talking about people much older than us, people who are 70 or 80 and they’ve got attitudes that don’t have the deep peaks and valleys as someone who in adolescence who is faced with some things and they go, “Fuck this, this sucks, how can we have any hope?” These are people who been through the invention of the horseless carriage to the car to the TV set and are dealing with internet. How do they view it? It’s almost with disdain. This is the wisdom they can’t give away, that is what I’m talking about and that youth doesn’t have that time line beneath them. So they just see something in front of them and think there’s no hope, no getting over it, what’s the point and so on. They are also bombarded with information more than ever these days, and negativity and cynicism and I can understand why they would feel that way. But they don’t have to. There really are positive actions that can be taken.

~

NOTES:

A song this close to my heart, I could ramble on all night. I will just pose one question, I wonder, how his opinions on the last quote (above), have stood up to time?

I have a better suggestion, just go find the song and have an experience. If you don’t feel anything, I can only shake my head and wonder at what could ever make you feel 😐

There There… Dear Society…

Oh, it’s a mystery to me
We have a greed with which we have agreed
And you think you have to want more than you need
Until you have it all you won’t be free

Society, you’re a crazy breed
Hope you’re not lonely without me…

When you want more than you have
You think you need…
And when you think more than you want
Your thoughts begin to bleed
I think I need to find a bigger place
Because when you have more than you think
You need more space

Society, you’re a crazy breed
Hope you’re not lonely without me…
Society, crazy indeed
Hope you’re not lonely without me…

There’s those thinking, more-or-less, less is more
But if less is more, how you keeping score?
Means for every point you make, your level drops
Kinda like you’re starting from the top
You can’t do that…

Society, you’re a crazy breed
Hope you’re not lonely without me…
Society, crazy indeed
Hope you’re not lonely without me…

Society, have mercy on me
Hope you’re not angry if I disagree…
Society, crazy indeed
Hope you’re not lonely without me…

Sorry for lifting off “There There” couldn’t think of anything better. For those not in the know, the clue is that its a Catch, Catch 22…

Oh by the way, which one’s Pink?

Pink Floyd has created some of the best music and have written some of the most thoughtful and poetic lyrics that I have been exposed to yet. But, I used to hate Pink Floyd and more than the band I used to despise the people who (apparently) blindly echoed their songs.

You ask why? Well, because, their songs forced mi to think and ask questions. Every time I heard them they implored mi to a call to arms, a call to arms to the lost cause of my comfortably numb mind. I was forced to take a long hard look at what I was running after, with each passing moment growing shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Was I becoming just another brick in the wall? When I looked into the mirror I saw the look in my eyes, like black holes in the sky and I reminisced of the time when I shone like a diamond. When I heard them, I could see what society was doing to itself, leading ourselves through pastures green, with bright knives we releaseth our own soul.

My soul asked mi where I was when it was being burnt and broken and I did not offer any answers, for to offer an excuse would have been akin to a confession of guilt but then so was my silence. And if there was one song that stood out and really raked my mind it was “Wish You Were Here“, I always heard it coming from my soul asking mi questions, imploring mi to change sides and come back to life.

I know and I have finally accepted that it is different for everyone and that is why the (apparently) above. But, I wish you were here.

I know I cannot possibly comprehend what it means to you but I also know that you cannot understand what it means to mi, after all we all live in our own universes. Though, I wish you were here.

The sad part is that we as a society have become completely intolerant towards each others universes and are unwilling to have a shared vision based on a little forethought, a little compassion, a little love and beer to fill in the gaps. How I wish you were here!

Wish You Were Here

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

~ Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd from the album Wish You Were Here.

P.S. Thank you for the music Mr. Pink 😛

P.P.S. I have had a similar grudge with Bob Dylan and a couple of others 😉

The Times They Are A-Changing

Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin’
Then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won’t come again
And don’t speak too soon
For the wheel’s still in spin
And there’s no tellin’ who that it’s namin’
For the loser now will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin’

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There’s a battle outside and it is ragin’
It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don’t criticize
What you can’t understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly agin’
Please get out of the new one if you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is rapidly fadin’
And the first one now will later be last
For the times they are a-changin’
